How it works

Building permit

As Midsummer Solar Roofs panels follow the shape of the roof, building permits are not required if you currently have metal roofing. However, if you switch from another roofing material e.g. brick to Midsummer solar roofs, building permits are required. For installation of solar panels outside the detailed planned area, a building permit is normally not required.

Building permits are required for installation of solar panels on buildings within areas classified as particularly valuable from a historical, cultural, environmental or artistic point of view. Building permits are also required for photovoltaic installations in areas of national interest for the total defense (Totalförsvaret).

Installation

Midsummer solar roofs are easy to install for the handy layman or your artisan. Please note that the electrical installations need to be done by an electrical installation company (with the type of electricity generation plants, which is found in the Swedish Electricity Safety Authority’s public register). This takes about one working day. If you need help finding artisans in your area, contact us and we will help you.

RECEIVE SOLAR CELL FINANCIAL AID

The solar cell aid or investment aid for solar cells as it is formally called is 20% of the total cost. After the autumn amending budget in 2019, the total budget for the support is 1.2 billion for 2019 and 835 million for 2020.

Use your solar energy

Enjoy your very own, self-produced electricity. Below we have calculated the value of each self-used kWh. The calculations are based on the distribution over the year in a normal villa in Stockholm with 25,000 kWh in annual consumption, which shows that 60% of the electricity can be used in the house and 40% is sold as surplus. This is because consumption is higher during the winter months due to greater heating requirements while production is lower. During the summer months the production from the solar cells is higher than the consumption, which produces excess energy that can be sold.

Surplus production 1000 kWh
Spot price (annual average 2018) 435 SEK
Energy tax 325 SEK
Variable part of the network charge (based on a common network charge – check with your power company) 400 SEK
VAT 299 SEK
Total value for 1000 kWh 1494 SEK
Total value per kWh 1,49 SEK/kWh

Sell the surplus

Our calculations are based on the distribution over the year in a normal villa in Stockholm with 25,000 kWh in annual consumption shows that 60% of the electricity can be used in the house and 40% sold as surplus.
The compensation you receive for your surplus sold is divided into the five sources below.

Compensation from your electricity trading company

The company from which you buy electricity (your electricity trading company) must by law buy your surplus. Remuneration is usually the spot price on the Nordpool electricity exchange plus any supplement and the annual average value of the spot price is 36 öre / kWh during the first quarter of 2018. The remuneration from your electricity trading company is exempt from VAT if the turnover from your total business is below SEK 30,000 / year, so in most cases with installations on villa roofs. Your electricity supplier will then pay compensation to you without VAT.

Tax deduction

Tax deduction – for natural and legal persons of SEK 0.60 per sold kWh up to 30,000 kWh and SEK 18,000.

Compensation for network utility

When you produce and sell electricity to the grid, it can be used by your neighbors. This reduces the need for transmission of electricity over long distances, which reduces the load on the grid. For that, you get compensation for grid benefit from your electricity grid company (those who own the electricity grid in your area) of 3 – 7 öre / kWh.

Electricity certificate

Electricity certificates are financial support for producers of renewable electricity. For every 1000 kWh the plant produces, you will receive an electricity certificate from the state. You can sell the electricity certificates on an open market where the price is agreed upon by the seller and the buyer. The annual average value for electricity certificates was 9 öre / kWh during the first quarter of 2018.

Guarantees of origin

Guarantees of origin are electronic documents to guarantee the origin of electricity. The purpose is for the end customer of electricity to gain a clear knowledge of the origin of electricity. For every 1000 kWh your plant produces, you receive a guarantee of origin by the state. Origin guarantees are sold by electricity producers and purchased by electricity suppliers. The price you receive for guarantees of origin varies and is in the order of 1 öre / kWh.

Example

Surplus production 1000 kWh
Spot price (annual average 2018) 435 SEK
Energy tax 325 SEK
Variable part of the network charge (based on a common network charge – check with your electricity supplier) 400 SEK
VAT 299 SEK
Total value for 1000 kWh 1494 SEK
Total value per kWh 1,49 SEK/kWh

REQUIREMENTS FOR SELLING THE SURPLUS

  1. You have the required subscription to sell production surplus with your network company

  2. You produce renewable electricity

  3. Your power plant must have a main fuse of no more than 63 A, and the input power for your production plant must not exceed 43.5 kW. Normal main fuse on a villa is 16 A and a normal sized installation on a roof is 5 – 10 kW.

  4. You must be permanently connected to the main grid

  5. Withdrawal and supplying of electricity takes place via the same main fuse and electricity meter

  6. You buy more electricity than you sell the product over a whole year

BATTERIES AND STATE AID

If you want supplementary batteries for storage of self-generated electricity, Midsummer solar roofs has got you covered. Contact us and we will tell you more. You can find our contact information in the site footer.

The batteries are also eligible for financial support. Grants may be given with a maximum of 60 percent of the eligible costs, but with a maximum of SEK 50,000. Eligible costs are costs of installing electrical energy storage systems, such as battery, cabling, control systems, smart energy hubs and work. Aid is valid until December 31, 2019.
